How can one visit St Petersburg and not visit the city’s most popular attraction; The Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood in St Petersburg, Russia! This name is usually shorted to just Church on Spilled Blood as its a mouthful. Intricately detailed both inside and outside its a beautiful sight to behold. This beauty, unfortunately, came about from a rather unfortunate event.
This church was built on the site where Emperor Alexander II was fatally wounded by political nihilists in March 1881. I am a sucker for beautiful architecture and even more so religious architecture. I shared another post on our visit to St Petersburg Mosque. In addition to that my recent post of Abu Dhabi’s Grand Mosque. The project was commissioned by the imperial family and built between 1883 and 1907.
The location where The Church on Spilled Blood marks the spot where Alexander II was fatally wounded in an assassination attempt on March 1, 1881. Designed by Alfred Parland in the style of 16th and 17th-century Russian churches, the Church of the Resurrection provides a stark contrast to its surroundings of Baroque, Classical and Modernist architecture. The style of the church is in line with the Saint Basil’s Cathedral in Moscow.

Church Of The Savior On Spilled Blood
The Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood is fairly easy to get to. You can walk to the church from many nearby hotels in St Petersburg. The church is prominently situated along the Griboedov Canal; paved roads run along both sides of the canal. We also managed to use the buses in the city as well as Uber both of which of which are safe to use. If you are going to use the buses just be sure to watch your valuables as pickpockets are rife as the can spot a tourist a mile away and they work in groups.
You can combine your visit to the Church on Spilled Blood with out of the many St Petersburg boat tours. As beautiful as the Church of the Savior on the Spilled Blood is, there are no baptisms, funeral services, weddings, or other traditional church services were held in the Church on the Blood as this was not in Alexander III’s plans. It was built as a memorial to his father. However, weekly requiems (for Alexander II) and sermon readings attracted large numbers of worshippers.
