Sydney Suburbs & Neighbourhoods
Sydney like many major cities is made up of several neighbourhoods or suburbs. Below are some of the neighbourhoods in Sydney to give you a guide to the best areas to stay in Sydney for tourists, those looking for quiet areas, where to stay in Sydney with family or kids. I, of course, chose to stay fairly central in Sydney in the CBD. I could walk to most tourist attractions from my Meriton apartment in Sydney. For a full list of hotels in Sydney click here.

Sydney CBS and Inner Suburbs
Sydney CBD is the main business district in Sydney and in turn surrounded by inner neighbourhoods of Woolloomooloo, Potts Point, Surry Hills, Darlinghurst, Pyrmont, Ultimo, Millers Point and the Rocks. The majority of tourists visiting Sydney will stay in CBD and inner neighbourhoods because this is where you will find many of the important and cultural tourism hubs. This is where Circular Quay, Chinatown, Kingscross, and tourist attractions like Sydney Opera House, Hyde Park, the main shopping malls like Westfield and Pitt Street Mall are located, in addition to Sydney Tower.
Another well-known suburb is Waterloo and Paddington. Paddington is well known for its restored terraced houses and the weekly Oxford Street markets.
-
Eastern Suburbs
This is among the most affluent areas of Sydney and in the country! Some streets in the Eastern suburbs are among the most expensive in the world. So if you have a budget with no limits, you may want to consider places to stay in this area. BUT, this is also where you will find landmarks like Bondi Beach, Bondi Junction – a Westfield shopping centre.
-
Southern Sydney
This includes suburbs like Rockdale, George River, Sutherland and Kurnell Peninsula and where you will find the Royal National Park, Australia’s oldest national park. There is also a Hurstville, a large suburb with a multitude of commercial buildings and high-rise residential buildings dominating the skyline, has become a CBD for the southern suburbs.
-
Northern Suburbs
There are several landmarks within the Northern suburbs offering reasons to stay here. The Macquarie University, Gladesville Bridge, Ryde Bridge, Macquarie Centre and Curzon Hall in Marsfield. Northern Suburbs’ is not a clearly defined region, ‘Northern Suburbs’ may also include the suburbs in the Upper North Shore, Lower North Shore and the Northern Beaches. The Northern Beaches area includes Manly, one of Sydney’s most popular holiday destinations for much of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The region also features Sydney Heads, a series of headlands which form the 2 km (1.2 mi) wide entrance to Sydney Harbour. The Northern Beaches area extends south to the entrance of Port Jackson (Sydney Harbour), west to Middle Harbour and north to the entrance of Broken Bay. The 2011 Australian census found the Northern Beaches to be the most white and mono-ethnic district in Australia, contrasting with its more-diverse neighbours, the North Shore and the Central Coast. If you want beaches, this is an area you want to look to stay near.
-
Hills District
The region is so named for its characteristically comparatively hilly topography as the Cumberland Plain lifts up, joining the Hornsby Plateau. In addition, several of its suburbs also have “Hill” or “Hills” in their names, such as Baulkham Hills, Castle Hill, Seven Hills, Pendle Hill, Beaumont Hills, and Winston Hills, among others. Windsor and Old Windsor Roads are historic roads in Australia, as they are the second and third roads, respectively, laid in the colony.
-
Western Suburbs
This is the sixth-largest district in Australia. The population here is predominantly of a working class background, with major employment in the heavy industries and vocational trade. There several reasons why tourists might want to stay in the suburbs within the Western side of Sydney. This is where you will find Ragin Waters water park, Sydney Olympic Park, Central Nature Reserve, Featherdale Wildlife Park, Australian Zoo and Westfield Paramatta, which is Australia’s busiest Westfield shopping centre with a staggering 30 million visitors a year.
