It would be an understatement to say that Australians love their coffee so we set our selves a task of finding the best coffee and best brunch in Melbourne. Also, keep in mind, that you see Starbucks on every corner of Melbourne. They take their coffee seriously here, which has morphed into an obsession with quality coffee. It may come as no surprise to anyone had has read my rants about Starbucks and their none-paying tax butts.
In addition to not paying taxes, I wouldn’t put quality and coffee together when it comes to Starbucks, which has also seen them open 84 stores in the city only to close 61 of them in the 8 years since opening. They could not rise to the challenge when compared to the cafes that pour out high-quality shots that Australians are accustomed to. The coffee culture in Australia is a lot more mature than I and a lot of people expect when visiting this far away land.
I love that Sydney and Melbourne boasts a lot of independently owned cafes that not only produce great cups of joe but the food matches deliciously. Why is that you might wonder? Apparently, the answer lies in the immigration of the Greeks and Italians that made the way to Australia in the early 20th century and with them came the food and coffee!!
I wasn’t going to visit Melbourne without checking out a few brunch spots. When my friend was working, I was roaming the alleyways checking out the coffee scene. It wasn’t until she a weekend when she took me to Dench which is hidden close to the residential area of Fitzroy. If you love a good brunch, food or a cool bar Brunswick is one place you need to check out in Melbourne.
If you have been to London’s Shoreditch then I would liken it to that. It’s cool, vibrant and draws in the artsy type and fashionably cool types. The is a lot of street art around the area but also has an up and coming type of vibe to it. The street is lined with cafes, that cater to the meat lovers as well as the veggie nibblers. I have never seen more vegan and vegetarian cafes in more area.
Brunswick might seem like a little out of the way from CBD but definitely worth it if you are a real foodie. Below are some of the tasty delights we wolfed down at Dench and for more food best tours in Melbourne, check out Viator Food Tours in the city. Looks so delicious, and I'm totally with you on the quality coffee – Starbucks is so not worth the hype.
